Coral Gables Dentist Fluoride Treatments

Coral Gables Dentist Fluoride TreatmentsTooth decay ( cavities/caries ) is caused by bacteria that produce acid. These collect around the teeth and gums as “plaque.” Plaque, although always present, is a sticky, clear film that causes much destruction if not removed on a regular basis.

Brushing twice a day and flossing between teeth helps remove plaque for keeping teeth healthy. Regular dental examinations and cleanings are very important in this regular maintenance as well.

Additionally, fluoride is another ingredient for maintaining optimal oral health. Fluoride is a mineral that helps mineralize ( repair ) teeth and can assist in caries prevention during the early stages of the disease.

Fluoride is administered in two forms:

  • Topically ( Applied )
  • Systemically ( Swallowed )

Topical Fluorides

These are applied directly to the tooth enamel. These may include:

    • Fluoride toothpastes/creams/gels/mouth rinses
    • Fluoride treatments administered professionally in the office

Systemic Fluorides

These are swallowed and may include:

    • Fluoridated water
    • Dietary fluoride supplements

Professional Fluoride Treatment

Dr. Dargham may recommend an in-office Fluoride preparation administered to patients with a moderate to high risk of developing caries. This formulation is much stronger in concentration than that in some tooth pastes or mouthrinses available over the counter.

Professional Fluoride treatments generally take a few minutes to administer and may be in the form of a solution, gel, foam, or varnish. Methods of application may include a cotton swab, brush, or tray.

You may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least thirty minutes after the treatment to allow complete Fluoride absorption into the teeth.

Fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six, or twelve months. Dr. Dargham may also suggest additional preventative measures if you are at moderate to high risk of developing caries, or tooth decay. These may include over the counter or prescription therapies such as Fluoride mouth rinses, gels, or pastes.

Please contact Dr. Dargham and her team to schedule your initial consultation. For your convenience, Dr. Dargham welcomes patients in one of two locations (Coconut Grove Dental Clinic and Biscayne Blvd. Dental Clinic), both located in the heart of Miami Dade County.
